We Promised Him the World

We weren’t kidding – the whole world!

This past Friday, Dr. Pablo Londero, from Yale’s Institute for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage, visited the Library’s conservation lab to carry out microfading testing on the Library’s pair of Coronelli globes.   The Library’s conservators requested the testing to help create exhibition guidelines for these recently treated 17th century globes.

By understanding the sensitivity of the various colors that comprise an image or design on an object, one can make informed decisions about when, how and/or if to display objects like these globes. The testing is essentially non-destructive, leaving no visible trace on the surface of the object.

To learn more about the Microfader Tester (MFT), consult the IPCH website.  http://ipch.yale.edu/microfading-tester-mft

Conservation & Exhibition Services hosted a visit and tour today for Stephen Parks and Earle Havens. Parks is the Librarian and Chairman of the Incorporators of the Elizabethan Club at Yale University. Parks was also the Curator the Osborn Collection at the Beinecke Library. Our Exhibition & Housing laboratory is named in his honor by generous Yale University Library supporters.  Mr. Parks graciously allowed us to photograph him standing near the commemorative name plate in the room that bears his name and celebrates his many years of exhibit curation.

Havens, the Nancy H. Hall Curator of Rare Books & Manuscripts at Johns Hopkins University, is speaking today at the Sterling Memorial Library as part of an Elizabethan Clube sponsored lecture, Pamphlet Wars: An Elizabethan Crisis in the Low Countries, 1587
